Insulated roofing replaces traditional single-skin steel on the roof — the surface that takes more solar radiation than any other. A single-skin roof can push the temperature inside a factory above the outdoor temperature, while an insulated roof keeps that difference within reason without adding ventilation capacity.

1. Types of insulated roofing

  • PU/PIR roofing: a polyurethane core with the lowest thermal conductivity of the common options, and a pre-formed rib profile that installs quickly.
  • EPS roofing: an EPS foam core, low in cost and suited to projects with moderate insulation requirements.
  • Rock wool roofing: strong on fire and acoustic performance, usually used where there is a fire requirement.
  • Three-layer PU foam roofing: a thin sprayed PU layer — the economical option for an ordinary factory roof.

2. Why the roof comes first

In a factory the roof takes direct radiation almost all day and is the largest surface there is. Insulating the roof usually buys more per unit of cost than insulating the walls, especially in a hot climate.

3. How to choose

  • Insulation thickness: 25 – 50 mm for an ordinary factory; temperature-controlled buildings need to be calculated from the actual heat load.
  • Rib profile and pitch: must match the purlin spacing so the panel carries its load and sheds water.
  • Roof slope: low-pitch roofs need care with side laps and waterproofing at the fixings.
  • Fire requirements: projects subject to approval should favour a PIR or mineral wool core.
From experience: combining insulated roofing with roof ventilation (turbine vents or a monitor roof) works far better than simply adding insulation thickness.

Conclusion

Choosing insulated roofing is a balance between thermal performance, fire requirements and budget. For most industrial factories, a PU/PIR panel of 25 – 50 mm strikes that balance well.
